PORT LOUIS, Mauritius | Reunion, led by star golfer Melliyal Schmit, are destined to emerge as champions of the Africa Region VI Junior Team Championship at the Tamarina Golf and Spa resort in Mauritius that ends August 28th.
Going into the final day, Reunion hold a commanding 21-stroke advantage over second-placed Kenya. Mauritius are third with Uganda in fourth position.
The hosts, Mauritius, are joined by Reunion, Madagascar, Tanzania, Kenya and Uganda at the championship. Each team shall consist of four players (2 boys and 2 girls).
For team scoring, the best three gross scores out of four will count towards the team’s score each day.
The championship marks a historic milestone for junior golf on the continent, bringing together top young golfers from Region IV countries under the Africa Golf Confederation umbrella. Africa Golf Confederation President Johnson Omolo is in Mauritius to preside over the event.
For the first time, Africa’s rising stars will compete in a dedicated regional platform designed to nurture talent, foster friendships, and prepare juniors for future international competitions.
The Region IV Championship is inspired by the growing success of continental competitions such as the All-Africa Junior Team Championships which has over the years provided Junior African golfers with opportunities to showcase their talent on the global stage.
However, the Region IV event stands out as a dedicated junior-focused tournament aimed at broadening the pipeline of young golfers while creating equal opportunities across participating countries.
